Mauritius is situated in the Indian ocean, approximately 2400 kilometers off the South East Coast of Africa . The island, which is of volcanic origin, measures 45 km in width and 65 Km in length , covers an area of 1,865 square kilometers or 720 square miles. Coral reefs surround most of the coast except the south.

In the central part of the island , the maximum daytime temperature varies from about 19 C in August to about 26 C in February . The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier that the East and the South.
