Adventure in the South

The Statue of Shiva in Grand Bassin
God Shiva is the main divinity of the Hindu religion. The Statue of Shiva of 36 meters high is the highest statue in Mauritius. The Government of India funded the project and Indian artisans constructed the statue.
Grand-Bassin
A legend is associated with this special lake. According to the legend it originated from water drops that fell from God Shiva’s head that was fascinated by the beauty of Mauritius while carrying the Ganges River in order to prevent a flooding. Every year between February and March, the lake is the converging point of pilgrims of hindu faith who undertake the pilgrimage in order to pay homage to God Shiva on the occasion Maha Shivaratee festival. Maha Shivaratee is among the important religious festivals of India. On the banks of the lake rise picturesque temples and numerous statues of divinities. Monkeys have elected domain in the surroundings and giant eels in the lake.
The Panoramic Terrace
From the Black river gorges natural park we can admire lush green wild tropical forests. If we are lucky, we will see deers of Java pasturing freely.
The Seven colored earth of Chamarel
Chamarel is a geological zone of undulate land of many contrasting colors. The phenomenon is of volcanic origin. It is in fact ashes produced by erosion subdivided meticulously in fields and various layers: blue, green, yellow, violet and red zones.
Inside the park of Chamarel, it is possible to admire centenary turtles originating from the Seychelles Archipelago.
Black River Gorges Park
Inside the Black River Gorges that extends on 6,574,150 acres are 150 endemic plants and 9 species of birds. While hikin down the gorges with guides, we come across small waterfalls that run down in rivulets to reach the south sea coast.
Casela Bird Park
A fantastic ornithological park that accommodates over 2,500 birds, monkeys, tigers, kangaroo and centenary turtles. While walking around, you will also meet the pink pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world. The park is endowed with green tropical vegetation with sprinkling small lakes and rivers. A breath-taking panorama dominates the view of the west coast.
The water reserve of Mare aux Vacoas
A man made lake that retains water through appropriate ducts, it supply water to a large part of the island.
Les Salines, Tamarin
Pinapples, Coffee and Palm trees are cultivated at les Salines.
